Widespread in eastern Australia from Shepparton, Vic, to Port Augusta, SA  and n to Cape York, Queensland and ne NT. Occupies virtually all habitat types within this broad range.

Found in arid eastern interior, from about Muttaburra in central Queensland s. to nw NSW to adjacent SA. Shelters under leaf litter at bases of trees and shrubs.

Also known as Mud Adder.  Favours cracks in clay baked soil on moist alluvial flats vegetated with woodlands or scrublands, particularly lignum and brigalow. Preys on frogs, geckos. Potentially dangerous. Critically endangered in Victoria, where there are a small pocket; otherwise found in central south Queensland and c entree northern NSW.
