BOYD'S FOREST DRAGON

AUSTRALIAN LIZARDS             56

  Arboreal; found in rainforests and margins; located in Wet Tropics of northern Queensland, from north of Townsville to near Cooktown. Spend their time perched on trunks of trees, about head-height, but will move around to opposite side of tree to avoid detection. Active in the day, sitting and waiting to catch their prey, mainly invertebrates and earthworms.

Also known as Southern Forest Dragon; former latin name Hypsiluris spinipes. Australian endemic; found in eastern Australian rainforests and rainforest margins from around Gosford (NSW) to near Gympie (Q); also present in Barrington Tops National Park (NSW). Primarily arboreal, cryptic, slow moving and well camouflaged Thermoconformer, allowing body temperature to fluctuate with surrounding temperature. Eats insects and other arthropods.
