Abundant and widespread through central Australia: central WA southern 2/3 NT, northern SA, western Queensland and nw NSW. Prefers open spaces, has a burrow where shelter from enemies and the heat. Eats insects and vegetation.

Also known as Bauxite Rainbow Skink or Amax Rainbow Skink. Found in Kimberleys, Wa, across northern NT and nw Queensland. Eats invertebrates. Diurnal. Habit dry sclerophyll forest, humid woodland, dry woodland, dry grassland/shrubland.

AUSTRALIAN SNAKE               23

Capable of inflicting a fatal bite. Also known as Mulga Snake. Large, dangerous snake, widely distributed across most of Australia mainland ; becoming rare in areas where Cane Toads are established. Commonly feeds on other snakes; actually a black snake but called King Brown because it eats brown snakes. When a person is bittern they are given black snake anti-venom, not brown.

Capable of inflicting fatal bite. Occurs tropical NT and Queensland, commonly encountered in suburbs of Darwin. Diurnal, crepuscular, nocturnal. Eats frogs, reptiles and mammals.

Widespread in arid Australia. generally associated with rocky outcrops, but also occurs in open plains, sheltering in termite mounds, soil crevices and in timber in watercourses. Nocturnal, eating birds, reptiles, frogs and mammals.

Also known as Curl Snake, because of habit of flattening body into a series of tight curls when threatened. Native to Australia. Venomous. Average length 40 cm. Found in grasslands, scrublands, and open woodland foraging amongst leaf litter and under rocks at night. In all states except Tasmania; Arid and eastern central Australia; north and central regions of Victoria; far n-e of WA.
